Your home's roof is one of the most important parts of the entire property. A quality roof can last for decades and will continue to provide you and your home with great protection. While a quality roof is designed to last, it does require some maintenance to prevent damage and long-term wear and tear. There are several maintenance tips to follow to keep your roof in good condition.

Keep Gutters Clean

Your roof gutters are very important as they will help to remove rainwater and small pieces of debris off your roof and through your downspouts. Unfortunately, gutters can slowly accumulate dirt, leaves, and other debris. They are also common places for pests to create nests and make a home. If the gutters are clogged, it can lead to a buildup of water and cause damage. To ensure this does not happen you should have your gutters cleaned out at least a couple of times per year. You can also easily help by cleaning and rinsing out your downspouts once per month.

Remove Large Items from Roof

It is also a good idea to remove large items from your roof on a regular basis. Large branches and other pieces of debris may remain stationary until they are removed by hand. These items can lead to damage, particularly when the weather turns and they begin to freeze. Due to this, you should inspect your roof regularly and make sure that it is properly cleared of these items.

Trim Trees

One of the most common reasons why your roof could incur some areas of damage is because of overhanging trees. Large tree branches that hang over your roof will drop leaves, branches, and other debris regularly. They also provide an easy access point for squirrels and other pests that have the habit of digging into your roof or clogging gutters. Having the trees trimmed regularly can help prevent a lot of potential roof challenges. Give us a call when you’re ready to have your trees professionally trimmed.

Help Remove Snow

If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow during the winter, doing your best to clear some off the roof is helpful. A significant accumulation of snow can put a lot of stress on the roof, cause leaks, and create ice dams. Through the use of a roof rake, you can help to remove some of the snow and avoid various roof challenges.

Ultimately, caring for your roof is a great way to ensure it will last and continue to protect your home. These tips are great examples of ways that someone can maintain and protect their roof. This can help you extend the useful life of your roof and gutters and allow you to avoid a variety of other home repairs.
